Three realistic budgets

Lean — around $700–1,200. Premade cover ($400), proofread ($300), free formatting, free platform ISBN, no ads. Viable, and how many successful first books were published.

Standard — around $2,500–4,000. Custom cover ($1,000), copy edit ($1,200), proofread ($400), formatting tool ($200), ISBN block ($295), registration ($65), modest launch spend. This is what most professionally-presented indie books cost.

Full — $5,000–8,000+. Developmental edit added, higher-end cover, audiobook production, significant advertising.

Where the money leaks

The number nobody quotes

The recurring cost. A subscription stack — cloud storage, design tool, grammar checker, plotting tool, email, database — runs roughly $60–90 a month. Over a two-year write-and- launch cycle that's $1,400–2,200, which rarely appears in cost-to-publish articles and is often larger than the cover.

Common exceptions

Non-fiction and technical books often cost more — indexing, fact-checking, permissions.
Illustrated and children's books are dominated by illustration cost, easily $2,000+.
