Channels That Actually Work

Where to Invest Your Time

TikTok (Faceless Options)

You don't need to show your face to be successful on TikTok.

  • Text-over-video: writing tips, book facts, industry insights
  • Screen recordings: research, writing software tutorials
  • Voice-over with visuals: narrate over relevant images

Medium / Substack

Long-form platforms build deeper reader relationships. Publish articles that expand on your book's themes. Monetise Substack once you have sufficient audience. Use both to demonstrate expertise and collect emails.

Email (The Only Asset You Own)

Unlike social platforms, you control your email list completely. Offer a free resource related to your book. Provide value in every email. Weekly frequency works for most authors — consistency matters more than volume.

What to Stop Doing

Avoid

  • Avoid: Random social media posting without strategy
  • Avoid: Constant self-promotion without providing value
  • Avoid: Chasing every new platform instead of mastering a few
  • Avoid: Buying followers or engagement that doesn't convert
  • Avoid: Focusing on vanity metrics (likes, follows) over real engagement
  • Avoid: Neglecting email in favour of social platforms you don't own
