Money, Signals & Longevity

Understanding the financial reality of book publishing prevents unrealistic expectations and helps you make informed decisions about where to invest your time and money. Most books that succeed do so over years — not launch weeks.

This module sets out what each publishing route actually pays per sale, how to budget a book and work out its break-even point, and what realistic revenue looks like across the first few years rather than the first few weeks. Self-publishing royalty rates are quoted from the AuthorAZ publishing database, so they change when the platforms change them.

It also gives you the signals for deciding whether to persist, pivot or stop, and a quarterly review and annual decision so that call is made on data you have tracked — not on how a launch felt. Set your criteria before you need them. After a bad quarter, you will not be objective.
