What Reviews Are (and Aren't)

The Review Ecosystem

Lesson 1 of 8 · 1 min · Updated 3 September 2026

What Reviews DO Influence

  • Purchase decisions — readers scan for patterns, not individual opinions
  • Platform algorithms — Amazon considers quantity, recency, and ratings
  • Social proof — more reviews signal an established, trustworthy book
  • Search visibility — reviewed books rank higher in category searches

What Reviews DON'T Influence

Avoid

  • Avoid: Guaranteed sales — many well-reviewed books sell poorly
  • Avoid: Long-term success — sustained sales depend on ongoing marketing
  • Avoid: Industry recognition — customer reviews rarely influence agents or awards

Getting Reviews — The Right Way

ARC Readers (4–6 weeks before publication) — Send advance copies to 3–5 genre readers via NetGalley, BookSirens, or direct outreach. Honest reviews only. No pressure, no star-rating requests.

Soft Ask Language That Works

Back Matter

"If you enjoyed this book, I'd be grateful if you could take a moment to leave a review. Reviews help other readers discover books they might love."

Email Newsletter

"For those who've read [Title] — if you have a minute to share your thoughts on Amazon or Goodreads, it would help other readers find the book."
