The Default Path

Self-Publish First, Layer Everything Else

Lesson 4 of 8 · 1 min · Updated 2 September 2026

Why Self-Publishing Is the Default

Start with self-publishing unless you have compelling reasons to do otherwise. This is practical, not ideological. Self-publishing is the only path that begins immediately, requires no external permission, and places no ceiling on your potential earnings. It also teaches you the full publishing business — skills that transfer to every other model. The reverse is not true.

  • Generates immediate market feedback on your work
  • Builds a sales history that agents and publishers can evaluate
  • Creates income while you pursue other opportunities simultaneously
  • Teaches production, pricing, marketing, and reader relationship management
  • Maintains all your options rather than closing them down

"You are not committing to self-publishing forever. You are refusing to wait for permission to begin."

When to Go Traditional-Only

Rare circumstances justify bypassing self-publishing entirely:

  • You already have agent representation or publisher relationships in place — use them
  • Your book requires coordinated media campaigns beyond self-publishing reach (celebrity memoir, heavily illustrated works)
  • You cannot or will not invest the budget required for professional self-publishing quality

When to Query Agents Simultaneously

Run both tracks in parallel when these conditions apply:

  • Genre Performance — Your genre performs well in traditional publishing. Literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, and certain commercial categories still benefit significantly from traditional distribution and marketing support.
  • Credentials or Platform — You have leverage agents value: previous publications, relevant expertise, significant social media following, or industry connections that create built-in demand.
  • Extended Timeline Tolerance — Traditional publishing operates on 18–36 month cycles from contract to publication. If you need income sooner, self-publishing provides it while you wait.
  • Industry Validation Goal — You want access to review outlets, award consideration, and professional networks that remain difficult to access independently.
